Full description
Depart your hotel in Siem Reap and head to Phnom Kulen, regarded as the birthplace of the Khmer Empire. Enjoy a scenic drive through the countryside to the base of Phnom Kulen, then continue to the summit of the mountain. First, visit Pradak village and see how locals make a famous traditional steamed palm cake. Next, spend about 40 minutes at the “Amazing Cliff” viewpoint on Phnom Kulen. Admire the alien landscape formed by the smooth orange rock formations, contrasting with the green of the surrounding jungle. Continue to the River of a Thousand Siva Lingas and spend 30 minutes walking along the riverside. View hundreds of Siva Lingas carved into the sandstone riverbed. It is said that King Jayavaraman II bathed in this water and believed that the water was holy. Then, move to a 16th-century Buddhist monastery (Phra Ang Thom), where King Jayavaraman II declared the Khmer Empire in 802 AD. A short climb up a stone staircase leads you to a 17-meter reclining Buddha with views across the countryside. Around the base of the temple, monks and worshipers burn incense and leave offerings of fruit. Explore nearby winding jungle paths and see traditional Khmer healers plying their trade and selling Buddhist icons. Next, trek to the waterfall, where you can swim and relax. In the early afternoon, set out on the return journey to Siem Reap and arrive back at your hotel in the mid-afternoon.
